Shawn Camp Named Head Coach of Canada's 2005 National Under-18 Summer Team

CALGARY, ALBERTA - Hockey Canada, in conjunction with the Canadian Hockey League, announced on Tuesday that Shawn Camp, Head Coach of the OHL's Sarnia Sting will be the Head Coach of Canada's National Under-18 Summer Team for the Junior World Cup in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republic, August 9-14, 2005.

Canada will participate in two major international Under-18 events in 2005-2006 – one in August and another in April. Canada has participated in an August Under-18 Tournament in Europe since 1997, capturing gold at seven of the eight events, and winning gold last year.

Later this week, Hockey Canada’s Director of the Program of Excellence Blair Mackasey and the coaching staff will name the list of players that will be invited to attend Canada’s National Under-18 Development Camp, taking place in Kitchener, ON, July 30 – August 5, 2005.

Camp, 44, was the Head Coach of Canada’s Under-18 team in April that won silver at the 2005 World Championship. A NCCP Advanced I level certified coach, Camp was an Assistant Coach for Canada’s 2004 Under-18 summer team that won a gold medal at the Under-18 Junior World Cup in Czech Republic in August.

Prior to joining the Sting in 2004, Camp was the Head Coach of the Guelph Storm (OHL), and won the OHL Championship and a berth into the Memorial Cup in 2003-04.  Camp served as Guelph’s Assistant Coach from 2000-2003 and was the Head Coach of the Hawksbury Hawks (Junior A) from 1998-2000, leading them to the 1999 Canadian Junior A Championship.  He was an Assistant Coach in Hull (QMJHL) from 1996-1998, and helped lead the Hull Olympiques to a Quebec League Championship and a Memorial Cup title in 1997.

"I am extremely honoured to be a part of the Under-18 program again this summer," said Camp. "The tournaments last year were a great experience, and we will strive to continue to represent Canada at the highest level at this year’s Under 18 event.”

Hockey Canada and the CHL also announced the appointment of Camp's assistant coaches with the 2005 National Under-18 Team:

  • Cory Clouston, Head Coach of the WHL’s Kootenay Ice
  • Curtis Hunt, Head Coach of the WHL's Regina Pats

The appointments were announced following a thorough screening process carried out by Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence Policy Committee, which is made up of Bob Nicholson, President of Hockey Canada, Dave Branch, President of the Canadian Hockey League and Commissioner of the OHL, Gilles Courteau, the QMJHL Commissioner and WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. Hockey Canada was also represented by Marcel Redekop, vice-chair at large on the Hockey Canada Board and Hockey Canada’s Director of the Program of Excellence Blair Mackasey. The coaching staff for the 2006 World Under-18 Team in April, 2006 has not yet been named.

Clouston, 35, a NCCP Advanced l level certified coach, has been the Head Coach of the Kootenay Ice since 2002-03, and was their assistant coach from 1999-2002. Cory guided his team to win the WHL regular season Presidents Trophy in 2004-05, and was an assistant coach when the Ice won the WHL Championship in 1999--02, and the Memorial Cup in 2002. Cory played four years at the University of Alberta winning a CIAU National Championship in 1992.

Hunt, 42, a NCCP Advanced l level certified coach, Hunt just completed his first season as Head Coach of the WHL’s Regina Pats. In 2003-2004, he led Moose Jaw to their first-ever 40-plus-win season and East Division title and was named the runner-up to Kevin Constantine for the WHL Coach of the Year Award. Hunt played in 183 WHL regular season games with the Prince Albert Raiders from 1984 - 1987, winning the Memorial Cup in his rookie season. After his WHL playing career he played nine seasons in the IHL & AHL, playing in 527 regular season games and 50 games during the playoffs. Hunt began his coaching career in 1996-97 with the Grand-Rapids Griffins of the IHL as an Assistant Coach.
