Canada Captures 2006 Under-18 Junior World Cup in The Czech Republic With a 3-0 Victory Over Team USA

BRECLAV, CZECH REPUBLIC – Canada’s National Summer Under-18 Team captured its third consecutive Junior World Cup and tenth international summer under-18 event in 11 years, as Canada defeated USA 3-0 in the Championship Game on Saturday in Breclav, Czech Republic.

Forward Brett Sonne (Maple Ridge, BC/Calgary – WHL) one timed a set up pass from team captain, Angelo Esposito (Montreal, QC/Quebec – QMJHL) on a two man advantage to open the scoring for Team Canada at 10:49 of the first period.

Canada added to its lead 2:12 in to the second period when Sonne struck for his second of the game as he converted on a 2-on-1 odd man rush with forward Tyler Ennis (Edmonton, AB/Medicine Hat – WHL).

The lead was extended for Canada when Brandon Sutter (Red Deer, AB/Red Deer – WHL) left a drop pass for Ennis, who was able to beat USA goaltender Jeremy Smith at 10:38 of the third period, which turned out to be the final goal in a 3-0 Canada Victory.

Trevor Cann (Oakville, ON/Peterborough – OHL) registered the win in net for Team Canada, and Canadian forward Brett Sonne, with two goals, including the game winner, was named Player of the Game.

NATIONAL SUMMER UNDER-18 TEAM RETURN INFORMATION

Players and staff with Canada’s National Summer Under-18 Team will be leaving Breclav late this evening, en route to Prague for a morning flight. The team members will be arriving Canada on Sunday, August 13th. The entire team is flying in Toronto from Frankfurt, arriving at 3:25 pm (ET) on Lufthanza Flight 470.

NOTE TO MEDIA - Only the two players (Bryan Cameron, Trevor Cann) are staying in the Toronto area and, due to flight connections, may be the only players available to media upon arrival in Toronto

Canada’s National Summer Under-18 Team is one of two Under-18 Teams that Hockey Canada operates on an annual basis. In April, Canada’s World Championship Under-18 Team, comprised of players and staff members not involved in their respective league playoffs, will attend the 2007 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.
