Canada’s National Women’s Team to face United States in gold medal game at 2014 4 Nations Cup

The Canadians and Americans will meet Saturday night at the 4 Nations Cup.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Canada’s National Women’s Team has earned a berth in the gold medal game at the 2014 4 Nations Cup, beating Finland 3-1 Friday to finish an undefeated preliminary round.

Canada will face the United States in Saturday’s gold medal game at the Interior Savings Centre in Canada’s Tournament Capital, with puck drop scheduled for 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. The gold medal game can be seen across the TSN network, as well as on RDS.

Finland and Sweden will meet in Saturday’s bronze medal game, at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT. That game can be seen live and free through a FASTHockey webcast at www.hockeycanada.ca/4nations.

On Friday, Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./IK Guts, SWE) opened the scoring late in the first period for the Canadians, who held a 49-12 advantage in shots on goal. Canadian captain Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) doubled the lead early in the third before Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) finished the scoring into an empty net with 48 seconds left. Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, Alta./Harvard University, ECAC) made 11 saves for her second win of the tournament.

Canada finished in first place during the preliminary round, defeating Sweden 2-0 on Tuesday and the United States 3-2 on Wednesday, in addition to its win over Finland. The United States finished second, while Finland was third and Sweden settled for fourth place.

Since the debut of the 4 Nations Cup in 1996, Canada’s National Women’s Team has won the gold medal a total of 13 times (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013), and earned silver on five occasions (1997, 2003, 2008, 2011, 2012). Canada and USA had faced each other 17 times in the gold medal game at the 4 Nations Cup. Last year, Canada beat Finland 6-3 in the gold medal game in Lake Placid, NY.
