QUEBEC BLANKS ATLANTIC IN TOURNAMENT OPENER ST. ALBERT, Alta. – It only took a minute into the first game for Devon Thompson (Châteauguay, Que.) toscore the first goal of the 2011 Esso Cup, and help the Kodiaks du Lac St-Louis (Québec) top the Kings CountyKings 5-0, giving her team the first win of this year’s National Female Midget Championship. Thompson led the way for Lac St-Louis, pocketing an unassisted marker at just 1:03 in the first, andfollowing up about 10 minutes later on another goal, with an assist from Stephanie Pellerin-Therien(Pointe-Clare, Que.). Abbey Frazer (Hudson, Que.), a candidate for the 2010-11 National Women’s Under-18Team, made it 3-0 at 17:20 in the period to give Lac St-Louis a comfortable lead going into intermission. The team from Quebec continued to dominate the ice into the second, with Lily Sergeant (South Burlington,Verm.) digging at the net and putting it past the Kings County goal line midway through the period, with alittle help from blueliner Chelsea Zaidie (Pointe-Clare, Que.). The Kodiaks kicked off the third period fourgoals up on the Kings, but wouldn’t stop there, as Vickie Lemire (Rigaud, Que.) capped it off at 6:48 for thefinal 5-0 shutout win. Kings County netminder Emma Meanor (Morell, P.E.I.) made 27 saves, while Lac St-Louis goaltender LaurieAnne Beaulieu Châteauguay, Que.) stopped 19 shots. The Kings next face host team the St. Albert Slash onMonday night, while the Kodiaks play in the morning game against the Notre Dame Hounds (West). |
