STRONG ONTARIO RED SQUAD NOTCHES ANOTHER WIN
Saguenay, Que. – Ontario Red was an offensive force to be reckoned with once again Thursday evening, topping British Columbia 4-1, despite the west coast team's will to add another win to its standings after a strong tournament start. All was set for an emotional matchup, but in the end it was the defending champions who snagged the points, and a second victory at Canada's National Women's Under-18 Championship. Ontario Red scored the first goal, off a quick wrist shot from Victoria Pittens (Whitby, Ont.), taken on a 2-on-1 with six minutes left in the opening frame. Despite many rushes, B.C. went back to the locker room during the first intermission without a goal. Ontario Red goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) made five saves in the period. The central Canadians notched another goal in the middle frame, when Kristyn Capizzano (Oakville, Ont.) beat netminder Kimberly Newell (Burnaby, B.C.) on a rebound to double her team's advantage on the game sheet. Less than two minutes later, Pittens got her second of the night on assists from Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ont.) and Morgan Richardson (Ottawa, Ont.). Sarah Nurse (Hamilton, Ont.) added another for Ontario Red at 11:43 in the second for a 4-0 going into the third. Under pressure, British Columbia scored on a 5-on-3 midway through the final frame, thanks to Stephanie Schaupmeyer (Kelowna, B.C.) and a powerplay opportunity. Despite several nice plays within the dying minutes of the game, time ran down on the clock before B.C. could play catch up to a tough Ontario Red team. British Columbia will take on Manitoba on Friday (10 a.m. ET), while Ontario Red will play against Alberta (5 p.m. ET). There are still good seats for both of those games at the Centre Georges-Vézina, so stop by to see some great women's hockey action! |
