Team Russia scored five second-period goals to blast Team Canada West 6-1 in World Junior A Challenge Hockey exhibition action Friday night at the Nelson and District Community Complex Arena in Nelson.
The game was the first of the tournament for Team Russia which travels to Trail Saturday to meet Team Canada East.
Dmitri Kugryshev scoreed four minutes into the game on the power play to give Russia a 1-0 lead.
The vistors then blitzed Canada West for five goals in a 10-minute span - one on the power play and another playing shorthanded - to take a commanding 6-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Sergei Ostapchuk, Kirill Petrov, Andrey Loktionov, Maxim Chudinov and Evgeni Grachev scored rounded out the scoring for Russia.
The story of the game was Russian goalie Alexander Pechurskiy, who stopped 30 of 31 shots.
The only player to beat Pechurskiy was Canada West forward Zac Dalpe in the third period.
Team Canada West concludes the exhibition part of the tournament with a 1-1 record after defeating the Trail Smoke Eater 2-1 Thursday.
Canada West opens the tournament Tuesday in Trail against Team Germany.
