Finland opened the scoring on a goal by Esa Pirnes, on a powerplay. Canada responded to three straight goals, Shane Peacock, Craig Ferguson and team captain Jamie Heward gave Canada at 3-1. Juha Lind scored at 16:56 of the first period to make it Canada 3 Finland 2.

David Nemirovsky restored Canada's two goal lead at 7:51 and Shane Peacock, with his second marker of the game, put Canada ahead by three at 10:38. Anti-Jussi Niemi, an Anaheim draft pick, gave Finland some hope with a powerplay goal at 13:58 of the second, but Canada still led 5-3 through forty minutes of play.

Finland managed one goal in the third, scored by Marko Kiprusoff, but Canada held on for the 5-3 win, despite being outshot 41-13.
