Game Summary

Spengler Cup
December 28, 2002
Davos, Switzerland

Canada's National Men's Team continued their winning ways at the 2002 Spengler Cup with a 4-1 win over Sparta Prag (CZE) Saturday afternoon. Canada's power play proved to be too much for the reigning Czech league champions, notching three goals with the man-advantage.

In the first period, Mike Maneluk opened the scoring early with his first of two goals on the night, just over a minute in on the power play. Jean-Yves Roy netted his second goal in as many games after converting a Jan Alston pass at the 4:08 mark to give Canada a 2-0 lead. Canada continued their offensive pressure and it paid off when Ryan Savoia gave Canada a comfortable 3-0 lead with another power play goal at the 10:18 mark. Canada took a 3-0 lead into the second period.

In the second period, defence was the story as neither team allowed a goal despite numerous scoring chances. Shots on goal were 13-9 in favour of Canada.
In the third, Maneluk's second goal of the game put Canada ahead by four with fifteen minutes to play. Sparta Prag defenceman Frantisek Ptacek spoiled Canadian goaltender Jamie Hodson's (St. John's – AHL – Toronto Maple Leafs) shutout bid at the 9:35 mark. Canada would close the door from that point on, earning their second victory of the tournament with a 4-1 win.

Hodson recorded his first win in a Canadian uniform, stopping 29 of 30 shots he faced.
Canada's next game is against TPS Turku (FIN) on Sunday at 9:30am (EST).
