Canada 2 Suisse 1 (OT) Deutschland Cup Hnat Domenichelli scored in overtime to lift Canada to a 2-1 victory over Switzerland in front of over 9000 hometown fans in the refurbished Hallenstadion in Zurich. Canada opened the scoring at the 17:48 mark of the first period on an end to end solo effort by Lugano forward Glen Metropolit. Metropolit started behind his own goal and beat three Swiss players before snapping a shot over the glove hand of Swiss Player of the Game, goaltender Marco Burher. Switzerland evened the score on a goal from the slot that fooled goaltender Jeff Maund. The Vienna Capital goaltender made his first ever appearance for Team Canada, and made many great saves including two glove hand saves late in the third period with the Swiss on a 5 on 3 power play. Team Canada outshot the Swiss 32 19, with a roster comprised of 22 Canadian-born players from three different leagues in Europe. Team Canada will now travel to Mannheim, Germany on Wednesday and will be joined by 17 new players from the DEL (German Elite League). Goaltenders Jimmy Waite and Jeff Maund, defencemen Dan Lambert and Jeff Finley and forward Domenic Pittis are the only players from Tuesday’s game against Switzerland that will travel with Team Canada for the remainder of the three games in Germany. Team Canada claimed two of a possible three points with the overtime victory. (Three points are only awarded for a win in regulation time) The Swiss earned one1 point for the loss. Team Canada will face USA on Thursday in Mannheim before playing an afternoon game Friday in Hannover versus Slovakia. Team Canada will finish the tournament in Hannover against the home side from Germany.
