CANADA SCORES IN BUNCHES TO TOP GERMANY

VANCOUVER, BC – Canada started the scoring early and didn’t let up, opening up the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup with a 12-1 win over Germany on Tuesday night.

Greg Westlake (Oakville, ON) scored twice and Brad Bowden (Orton, ON) added one of his own as Canada jumped out to a 3-0 lead through one period.

Bowden’s goal was one of the prettiest of the night, as he took a pass from Adam Dixon (Midland, ON) on a two-on-none and one-timed the puck into the empty net.

It was in the second period where Canada opened up the floodgates – Graeme Murray (Gravenhurst, ON) scored twice and Billy Bridges (Summerside, PEI), Dixon and Bowden added singles as Canada went ahead 8-1.

Canada was relentless in its attack for the first 30 minutes, taking full advantage of its edge in speed and skill.

In the third, Bridges scored a pair of goals to complete his hat trick – he also had a pair of assists for a five-point night. Murray also turned the trick with his third goal of the game in the final frame.

Ray Grassi (Windsor, ON) dialed in from long distance for Canada’s final goal, as his shot from just inside the centre ice line eluded German goaltender Bruno Uhlemann.

Bowden finished with two goals and four assists for a six-point night, while Dixon also had a strong game with a goal and three helpers.

Benoit St-Amand (St-Hubert, QC) earned the win in goal for Canada, which returns to the ice on Wednesday for a game against the rival United States at 7 p.m. PT. Canada will complete its round-robin on Thursday versus Japan, also a 7 p.m. PT start at UBC Thunderbird Arena.
