JAPAN EARNS CLOSE WIN OVER UNITED STATES VANCOUVER, BC – Japan is apparently over the jet lag at the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup. The Japanese scored once in the first period, and twice, including an empty-netter, in the third for a 3-1 victory over the United States in the first game of the tournament on Tuesday afternoon at UBC Thunderbird Arena. Satoru Sudo opened the scoring in the first period with a shorthanded marker at 7:10, and Naohiko Ishida doubled the lead early in the final frame. The U.S. cut into that lead just over two minutes later when Andy Yohe scored, but Japan iced the victory at 14:28 with an empty-net goal from Daisuke Uehara, who also had an assist in the win. Japan (1-0) will face Germany at 1 p.m. PT on Wednesday, with the United States (0-1) going up against Canada in the feature game at 7 p.m. PT. |
