CANADA EARNS SERIES SWEEP WITH COMEBACK WIN
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Another game, another third-period comeback for Canada’s National Sledge Team.
Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) was credited with the game-winning goal with just over three minutes remaining after American forward Taylor Chace scored on his own goal, giving Canada a 2-1 win over the United States on Saturday night at the ESL Center.
The win gives Canada a sweep of the two-game series – it won the opener 3-2 on Friday in Buffalo, fighting back from a 2-0 deficit after two periods – and moves it to an impressive 14-1 in 2008-09.
Bridges scored both goals for the Canadians, who will look to defend their 2008 gold medal at the IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, set for May 9-16 in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Just as it was one night earlier, it was the Americans who hit the scoreboard first, as Brad Emmerson snapped a shot from the slot over the blocker of Canadian netminder Paul Rosen (Thornhill, Ont.) close to the game’s midway point.
But Bridges got Canada on the board 3:50 into the third period, and he was the last Canadian to touch the puck before Chace, trying to clear the puck into the corner, inadvertently beat American netminder Steve Cash for the eventual game-winner.
