BRIDGES SCORES TWICE AS CANADA OPENS WORLDS WITH WIN

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic – The road to gold has begun again for Canada’s National Sledge Team.

Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) scored twice and Paul Rosen (Thornhill, Ont.) and Benoît St-Amand (St-Hubert, Que.) combined to make just three saves for the shutout as Canada opened the 2009 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship with a 3-0 blanking of the Czech Republic on Saturday.

Shawn Matheson (Chatham, N.B.) had the other goal for the Canadians, who won their seventh in a row at the world championship, dating back to last year’s tournament in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Canada dominated the inexperienced Czechs in the first period, holding the world championship newcomers without a shot on goal and taking a lead on Bridges’ first of the game. He added his second early in the middle frame before Matheson rounded out the scoring late in the second.

Czech netminder Michal Vapenka was the star for the host country, turning aside 20 shots as Canada held a 23-3 advantage in shots on goal. He was the Czech player of the game, while Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.), who earned an assist on Matheson’s goal, picked up the award for Canada.

The Canadians are right back at it on Sunday as they face Germany (10 a.m. ET).
