SHORTHANDED OT GOAL LEAVES CANADA WITH SILVER Charlottetown, P.E.I. – Just 59 seconds away from its third-consecutive gold medal, Canada’s National Sledge Team had its hopes dashed Saturday afternoon at the 2009 World Sledge Hockey Challenge. Bubba Torres tied the game for the United States in the final minute of play and Taylor Chace scored shorthanded in overtime as the U.S. won its first-ever WSHC gold medal with a 3-2 extra time win in front of a packed house at the CARI Complex. Canada had won the first two editions of the tournament – 2007 in Kelowna, B.C. and 2008 in Charlottetown. Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) gave Canada its second lead of the game early in the third period – his fourth goal in two games – before the American comeback. Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) opened the scoring in the second period for Canada before Tim Jones equalized for the Americans late in the middle frame. Jones’ goal was the first allowed by Canada in the tournament. |
