WESTLAKE BOOSTS CANADA TO FIRST WIN OF WORLD SLEDGE CHALLENGE LONDON, Ont. – Canada opened its first game of the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge with aconvincing 3-1victory of over the United States inside the Western Fair Sports Centre on Monday night. Canada struck first with a powerplay goal from Anthony Gale (Brampton, Ont.) after a scramble in frontofAmerican netminder Steve Cash, but the United States responded just over a minute later with a shotfromforward Kevin McKee, who roofed it over Canadian goaltender Corbin Watson (Kingsville, Ont.) to eventhescore after one period of play. The Canadians continued to dominate in the second period with Captain Greg Westlake (Oakville,Ont.)scoring two unanswered goals and putting his team up two for the final score of 3-1. Both teams continued end-to-end action into the third period, which saw 12 minutes of combinedpenalties.But Canada prevailed in the end, holding the United States off to clinch its first win of thetournament. Westlake’s two goals in the second proved to solidify the win for Canada, also earning him player ofthegame honours. Defenceman Nikko Landeros was named player of the game for the United States. Tuesday’s preliminary round action features the United States taking on Japan at 12:30 p.m. ET, followedbyCanada against Norway at a 7 p.m. ET.
