2013-14 National Sledge Team

Canada 2 - Russia 1

REMPEL SCORES TWICE, CANADA ADVANCES TO FOUR NATIONS FINAL

SOCHI, Russia – Kevin Rempel (Vineland, Ont.) scored late in the first period and early in the second to lead Canada’s National Sledge Team to the gold medal game at the Four Nations Tournament after a 2-1 semifinal win over Russia on Saturday.

It’s the second win in three days for Canada over the Paralympic hosts; the Canadians beat the Russians 4-3 in a shootout in the preliminary round finale on Thursday.

Canada held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal in the first period, and took the lead when Dominic Larocque (Quebec City, Que.) and Marc Dorion (Bourget, Ont.) set up Rempel at 13:39 of the opening frame.

Rempel doubled the Canadian lead on a power play just 26 seconds into the second period, giving goaltender Corbin Watson (Kingsville, Ont.) all the offence he would need.

Watson finished with 13 saves, allowing only a power play to Evgeny Petrov late in the second period.

Canada was outshot 14-12 by the Russians.

The win means Canada will face Norway in Sunday’s gold medal game (8 a.m. ET/5 a.m. PT), while the Russians will take on the Czech Republic for bronze.
