VIERUMAKI, FI- Canada's National Women's team opened the 2001 3 Nations Cup on Friday, with a 5-0 victory over Sweden in Vierumaki, Finland. The game only lasted 30 minutes due to injuries to both Swedish goalies.

Canada opened the scoring as Correne Bredin carried the puck into the Swedish zone and fed Caroline Ouellette, who beat goaltender Charlotte Gotthesson with a quick wrist shot. Canada's Cherie Piper made the score 2-0 at 5:28, converting a Danielle Goyette pass behind Gotthesson. The Swedish goaltender left the game at 11:32 with what seemed to be a knee injury. Back-up goaltender Anica Ahlen took her spot in the Swedish net.

At 15:18, Canada's constant pressure got to Ahlen as Dana Antal scored on assists from Cassie Campbell and Geraldine Heaney, making the score 3-0.

In the middle frame, Canada's Nancy Drolet added a fourth goal at 2:43 as she overpowered Ahlen with a wrist shot that the Swedish goaltender couldn't handle. Jennifer Botterill scored on a power play at 11:01 as Canada took a commanding 5-0 lead.

At 11:54 the game was officially called as Sweden's second goaltender Anica Ahlen was injured. Canada won the game 5-0.

The two teams then unofficially completed the final 30 minutes of play with Canadian goaltender Sami Jo Small in Sweden's net. Canada scored once in the second period and three times in the third on their fellow teammate to make the unofficial final score 9-0. Goalscorers of Canada's four final goals were Botterill, Tammy Lee Shewchuk and Danielle Goyette (2),

Canada has Saturday off before facing Finland on Sunday, November 4th in Tampere, Finland.
