Game Notes in PDF format

Salt Lake City, Utah - Canada and the USA faced off for the first time since Canada edged them 3-2 in Minneapolis on April 8, 2001 to capture a seventh consecutive World title.

The host US team opened the scoring as Jenny Potter one-timed a wrist shot past Kim St-Pierre from the slot at the mid-point of the first period. Canada seemed to have bounced back to tie the game only moments later but the referee has lost sight of the puck and whistled the play dead. Caroline Ouellette and Amanda Benoit-Wark had great scoring opportunities in the following minutes but were held back by US goaltender Sarah Tueting.

St-Pierre was also up to the task, making a particularly good save off a screened shot by defenceman Courtney Kennedy.

Mid-way through the second period, US enjoyed over a one minute two-man advantage and eventually solved St-Pierre, as Katie King banged a rebound from in close to give the US a 2-0 lead.

USA took advantage of a second 2-player advantage in the third period, as Angela Ruggiero found the mark from the point, as the US took the lead 3-0.

Katie King made it 4-0 shorthanded, before Hayley Wickenheiser tipped home a shot by Isabelle Chartrand to break the ice for Canada.

The two teams hook up once again on Tuesday, October 23 in San Jose, CA.
