TEAM RED CAPTURES RED / WHITE SERIES
Team Red used three third period goals to defeat Team White 4-1 Sunday night, capturing the National Women’s
Team Development Camp’s Red / White series two games to one.
Both teams exchanged goals in the first period as Isabelle Chartrand (RED) and Cherie Piper (WHITE) put their
teams on the scoreboard. The score was 1-1 heading into the second period.
Goaltenders Charline Labonté (WHITE) and Kim St-Pierre (RED) took over in the second for Sami Jo Small
(WHITE) and Tania Pinelli (RED) and shut the door despite numerous chances by both teams. The series came
down to the final 20 minutes.
Team Red exploded for three goals in the third to take the win. Annie Desrosiers, Cassie Campbell and Amanda
Benoit-Wark all notched goals for Team Red.
Canada’s roster for the Four Nations Cup will be decided within the next week and will announced to the
public once finalized.
OCTOBER 12, 2002 - DAY 5
TEAMS PREPARE FOR FINAL RED / WHITE GAME
Saturday was a preparation day for both the Red and the White teams at the National Women’s Team
Development Camp in Vaughan, ON, as both teams get set for the third and final Red / White game, Sunday night
at 6:00pm at the Sports Village.
Both teams did skate Saturday, working on special teams for the majority of the practice. In addition to
the on-ice workouts, each team had an off-ice specialty teams meeting with the coaching staff.
Goaltenders saw extra work Saturday as goaltending coach Dave Jamieson took the four goaltenders for an
extra workout. With the help of associate coach Mike Pelino and six players, Jamieson put the puck stoppers
through an hour-long session focusing on cross crease movement and rebounds.
Sunday is the final day of Canada’s Development Camp as players will be departing for their club teams
after Sunday’s game as well as Monday morning. The players and staff would like to thank everyone involved in
the 2002 Development Camp for all their time and effort throughout the week. A special thanks goes out to the
Sports Village, the Courtyard Marriott and Dave and Busters.
OCTOBER 11, 2002 – DAY 4
TEAM RED EVENS THINGS UP
After dropping the first Red / White game at Canada’s National Women’s Team Development Camp on
Thursday night, Team Red fought back to win game two, 2-1 over Team White Friday night at the Sports Village
in Vaughan, ON.
Veteran Vicky Sunohara put Team Red on the board in the first period, beating Team White goalie Charline
Labonte at the 13:39 mark. The score would remain 1-0 heading into the second period.
In the second, both goalies, Labonté and Tania Pinelli displayed their talent as neither allowed a goal in
a spirited and action packed 20 minutes.
In the final period, Team White tied things up as Tammy Lee Shewchuk converted a Lori Dupuis pass for a
power play goal just over two minutes in, making the score 1-1. Team Red would regain the lead for good as
Gillian Apps powered to the net and beat Labonte at the 12:27 mark to give Team Red the win.
The two teams will decide the series winner Sunday at 6:00pm at the Sports Village. Sunday is the final
day of Canada’s Development Camp as players will be departing for their club teams Sunday night and Monday

OCTOBER 10, 2002 – DAY 3
TEAM WHITE TAKES GAME ONE OF RED / WHITE SERIES
Canada’s National Women’s Team Development Camp saw its first Red / White game Thursday night as Team White
defeated Team Red by a 2-1 score at the Sports Village in Vaughan, ON.
In the first period, Kim St-Pierre and Sami Jo Small were on their game as neither goaltender allowed a goal
and kept the game scoreless.
In the second period, Team White defenceman Becky Kellar opened the scoring with a nice wrist shot over the
shoulder of St-Pierre, giving Team White a 1-0 lead. Shortly after, Olympic captain Cassie Campbell evened
things up at one with a backhand between Small’s legs. Team White however would regain the lead as Dana Antal
put a shot past St-Pierre. Team White took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
In the final frame, both teams could not solve St-Pierre or Small once again and the game finished as a 2-1
victory for Team White.
An interesting part of Thursday’s game saw Head Coach Karen Hughes institute a set of five penalty shots
after each period. Hughes is using the drill to give the goalies an extra workout while preparing each player
for international competition, where a shootout is always a possibility.
The two teams will play game two of the three game series Friday at 4:00pm at the Sports Village. The final
game of the series will be Sunday night at 6:00pm. Team Canada will be training at the Sports Village in
Vaughan, ON until Sunday, OCTOBER 13th. All practices and Red / White games are open to the public and free
of charge

at the Sports Village.

to their second practice of the day, which was held in the evening.
Practices were very upbeat on Wednesday and players seemed to be settling in quite well. The intensity was
high as both teams prepared for Thursday’s Red / White game.
Forwards Joanne Eustace and Lori Dupuis did not skate Wednesday due to injury but will likely return to the
ice before too long.
Team Canada will be training at the Sports Village in Vaughan, ON until Sunday, OCTOBER 13th. All practices
and Red / White games are open to the public and free of charge.
