USA GETS BACK ON WINNING TRACK

Kitchener, ON – Despite trailing twice early on, USA finished strong en route to a 4-2 win over Finland for its first win of the 2006 4 Nations Cup.

Finland opened the scoring during the first period on a power play, as Michelle Karvinen cashed in at 17:56. But USA evened the score with one second to play in the period, as team captain Krissy Wendell beat Mira Kuisma.

Finland took the lead again the second frame, on another power play, as Nina Tikkanen made it 2-1 at 3:31. But the lead was short-lived once again. Twenty-seven seconds later, Karen Thatcher evened the score at two for the U.S.

The Americans would not trail again. Wendell, with her second goal of the game, and Gigi Marvin put USA ahead for good in the second. Marvin’s goal came on a power play.

Natalie Darwitz added a second USA power play goal in the third to make the final 5-2. The U.S. also dominated on the shot clock, 43-28.

Finland, with two losses, needs a win in its final game against Canada and some help from Sweden on Wednesday night to advance to the gold medal game Saturday night at 4 pm (live on TSN/RDS). The U.S. takes on Sweden on Friday afternoon.
