BOTTERILL, HEFFORD AND OUELLETTE LEAD CANADA TO WIN OVER FINLAND

Kitchener, ON – The line of Jennifer Botterill centring Caroline Ouellette and Jayna Hefford electrified the Kitchener crowd on Friday night, amassing 17 points and playing a part in Canada’s seven first goals in a convincing Canada’s 8-1 win over Finland. On a night in which she scored her 100th career Team Canada goal, Hefford registered a Team Canada record seven points as well, on three goals and four assists.

Canada opened the scoring at 8:24. Jennifer Botterill started circling the net but caught the defence napping by dropping the puck to Caroline Ouellette who banked it in off Finnish goaltender Mira Kuisma. For Ouellette, it was her 50th career Team Canada goal. Only thirty-five seconds later, Jayna Hefford found Ouellette by the side of the net, who slid her second net past Kuisma. The Canadian side returned to the dressing room with a 2-0 advantage.

Finland put an end to Shannon Szabados’ shutout streak at 2:30 of the second period, as Sara Tuominen took a centering pass from Karolina Rantamaki and beat the rookie Canadian netminder. Szabados shut out Sweden in Canada’s opening game, starting her career with over 82 scoreless minutes.

Canada restored its two-goal advantage two minutes later, as Hefford registered her third point of the night, a goal, with a quick shot from the slot that got by Kuisma. Hefford added a second goal, then Caroline Ouellette completed her hat trick to give Canada a 5-1 lead through forty minutes of play.

After a Kelly Béchard goal, set up by Botterill and Hefford, Hefford scored her historic 100th career goal on a spectacular three-way passing play with linemates Botterill and Oulette. Sarah Vaillancourt closed out the scoring in the third period. Shannon Szabados made 19 saves for her second career win in as many starts.

Canada now faces USA in the final on Saturday at 4 pm (ET) at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. The final will be broadcast live on TSN/RDS.
