Team A/White 1 - Team C/Red 2 Fall Festival Box Score | Kenora, ON – Team Red announced its arrival with a solid 2-1 win over Team White on Tuesday. Danielle Goyette’s third period goal, a slapshot, proved to be the winner and goaltender Shannon Szabados was flawless in the second half of the game, as Team Red joined Team White atop the early standings with three point. Team White took a 1-0 lead in the first period, despite trailing 16-9 in the shots on goal category. Team Red veterans Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON) and Danielle Goyette (St-Nazaire, QC) had great scoring opportunities early but were held abay by goaltender and Olympic teammate Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, QC). Cherie Piper (Scarborough, ON) had a shot go off the post behind Sami Jo Small, but it was rookie Therese Marchese (Brampton, ON) who scored the first goal of the game, firing a quick wrist shot over Small’s shoulder. The second period provided more great scoring chances for both teams but Labonté and Small were up to the task. At the midway point of the middle frame, they both gave way to replacements. Robyn Rittmaster (Halifax, NS) took over for Labonté while Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, AB) relieved Small. Team Red evened the score at 13:49, as Sommer West (Bowmanville, ON) received a Meghan Agosta pass in the slot and outwaited Rittmaster to slide the puck past the Team White netminder. Szabados only faced two shots in the second period, but they both forced her to come up with great stops. Valérie Chouinard (Matane, QC) had a glorious opportunity to put Team White ahead moments later, as she was sent in alone but Szabados was able to get across and make a pad save. Szabados, who found out on Monday that she had been traded to the AJHL’s Fort Saskatchewan Traders by Bonnyville, was also forced to come up big in the dying seconds of the frame. Defenceman Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, ON) pinched in from the point for Team White and had a point-blank chance but couldn’t beat Szabados. The game remained tied at 1-1 through forty minutes of play. Early in the third period, Team Red took the lead as three-time Olympian Goyette intercepted a pass a beat Rittmaster with a hard slapshot. Team White had a flurry of chances to even the score, especially in the final few moments of the game, but without the intended results. Team Red gets the 2-1 win. Game three of the Fall Festival round robin is Wednesday night at 7:30pm. Team B (Black) is back in action looking for a first win, taking on Team C (White). |
