TEAM RED GETS SIX POINTS IN WIN OVER TEAM BLACK

Kenora, ON – Team Red took full advantage of the special 4-on-4 shootout format to register six points in the Fall Festival standings on Thursday night, thanks to a 9-6 win and three goals in the third period shootout. Danielle Goyette scored twice in regulation while Colleen Sostorics added one goal and two assists to lead Team Red to the key victory.

The first period was a wide open affair, with both teams having to deal with several shorthanded situations. Hayley McMeekin (Unionville, ON) opened the scoring, on a Team Red power play, putting a quick shot past Laura Hosier (Sharon, ON). But Team Black came back with three consecutive markers, including two power play goals of its own. Tara French (Truro, NS) evened the score with a slap shot from the point on another power play, a shot that found its way through a screen and by Sami Jo Small (Winnipeg). Just over two minutes later, Team Black added its second goal. Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC) went wide on the defenceman and centred the puck to a wide open Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, QC) in front of Small, and the Olympic gold medalist scored her first goal of the Fall Festival. Kingsbury added a goal of her own at 12:51, pulling away from a defender and sliding it past Small.

Team Red climbed to within a goal before the end of the period, as Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC) scored on a Danielle Goyette feed. The goaltenders were flawless in the shootout that followed the first period and the teams headed to their respective dressing rooms with Team Black ahead 3-2.

Team Red carried the play in the second frame, scoring four times, while Team Black only managed a single goal. Veteran Danielle Goyette led the way with two, both on breakaways, while Colleen Sostorics and Rebecca Russell added singles. Kingsbury, with her second goal and third point of the game, scored Team Black’s only goal in the second period. Once again, the goaltenders were up to the task for the shootout, keeping all six shooters at bay. Team Red led 6-4 with one period to go.

Weatherston added a second goal at 8:23 of the third period for Team Black. Weatherston beat a defenceman and then pushed her own rebound past Small to get Team Black to within a goal of tying the game. The score remained 6-5 for Team Red through sixty minutes of play. Team Red added three goals in the shootout, by Ouellette, Sommer West and Meghan Agosta to put the game out of reach, and to register six points in the standings, three for the win and three for the shootout goals. Sabrina Harbec did score on the shootout for Team Black to salvage one point in the standings.

Action starts up again bright and early on Friday morning, with Team A (White) and Team B (Black) renewing acquaintances at 9:30 am (all times listed are Central Time). At 2:30 pm, it will be Team A (White) against Team C (Red), and the day closes out at 8:30 pm with Team A (White) taking on Team B (Black) taking on Team C (White). All games on Friday are once again 4-on-4 games, but without between period shootouts and periods will only be 15 minutes long.
