TEAM RED FINISHES OFF ROUND ROBIN IN STYLE WITH CONVINCING WIN OVER TEAM WHITE

Kenora, ON – Despite having already clinched first place in the round robin standings and a place in the final game, Team Red did not let up on Saturday morning in the final round robin game.  The game was a must-win game for Team White, as it trailed Team Black by three points for second place in the round robin.  However, it was Team Red that came up with the best effort, and was rewarded with an 11-2 win over Team White.

Defencemen accounted for Team Red’s two goals in the first period. Cathy Chartrand (Lac Nominigue, QC) opened the scoring at 5:38, and Carla MacLeod (Calgary, AB) made it 2-0 sixteen seconds later.  There were no goals for either side during the shootout.

Team Red came out firing in the second, with four straight goals, but Kaley Hall (Calgary, AB), Joanne Eustace (Torbay, NL), Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON) and Melanie Gagnon (St. Adolphe, MB) to take a commanding 6-0 lead.  Jesse Scanzano (Montreal, QC) did score for Team White on a splendid individual effort later in the second period, but Eustace scored in the post-period shootout, giving Team Red a 7-1 lead going into the final period of round robin action.

Danielle Goyette (St-Nazaire, QC) and Laura Fridfinsson (Arborg, MB) added singles for Team Red in the third period.  Goyette added a post-game shootout goal, as did Hefford for Team Red, while only Ashley Riggs (Pickering, ON) could beat Shannon Szabados in the shootout for Team White.  Team Red takes the win 11-2 over Team White.

Team White, with its third place finish, will be divided into two sides, and will face off in a 3-on-3 context at 6pm (Central Time) at the Kenora Recreational Centre.  The Championship Game, and final game of the 2006 National Women’s Team Fall Festival, will take place at 8:00 pm (Central Time) and feature Team Red vs. Team Black.  In the round robin portion of the event, Team Red suffered its only defeat of Team Black, a 3-2 loss on September 6th, but rebounded with 5-1 and 9-6 wins in the 4-on-4 round robin.
