POULIN SCORES FIVE, YELLOW FINISHES U18 SWEEP

TORONTO, Ont. – Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team hopefuls got a front-row seat for a performance from one of Canada’s top young players on Tuesday night, as Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.) scored five goals and set up another to lead Yellow to a 7-1 rout of White at the MasterCard Centre.

The win gave Yellow – an under-22 team – a sweep of both games against under-18 competition at the National Women’s Program selection camps. Yellow earned a 2-1 victory over Red on Monday, and will close the camp against Blue, the other U22 entry, on Saturday.

Poulin gave a glimpse of what was to come just 3:58 in, taking advantage of a mistake by White goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) to get Yellow on the board first.

Kristine Grenier (St. Leon, Man.) answered quickly for White, scoring just 12 seconds after Poulin’s goal, but it was all Yellow after that as it scored the game’s final six goals, including markers from Poulin and Hannah Armstrong (Sharon, Ont.) before the end of the opening 20 minutes.

Poulin – who just six months ago earned herself a spot in Canadian hockey history by scoring both of Canada’s goals ina  2-0 Olympic gold medal game victory over the United States, completed her hat trick five minutes into the second period before adding a fourth seven minutes later.

Despite trailing 4-1, White had its chances in the middle frame, including four-consecutive power plays in a span of 11 minutes, but could not beat Yellow netminder Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont.), who made 10 of her 19 saves in the second period.

Brianne Jenner (St. Catharines, Ont.) made it 6-1 midway through the third period before Poulin finished off her six-point night with her fifth goal of the game at the 17:12 mark.
