U18S CAN’T HOLD THIRD-PERIOD LEAD, FALL TO AMERICANS IN SERIES FINALE LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Katy Josephs (Cochrane, Alta.) and Cayley Mercer (Exeter, Ont.) scored goals to give Canada a 3-2 third-period lead, but it wasn’t enough as the United States earned a 4-3 win on Saturday morning, completing a three-game sweep of the Canadians.
It’s the first time in the four-year history of the series that Canada has lost all three games – they were 6-3 all-time in summer play entering this year. For the second time in three games it was Canada who hit the scoreboard first, with an Emily Fulton (Stratford, Ont.) unassisted effort giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage. But a pair of Emilys got that one right back for the Americans, as Emily Pfalzer set up Emily Field to tie the game just 50 seconds after Fulton’s goal. Despite outshooting the Canadians 26-16 through the first 40 minutes it took until the 13:51 mark of the second period for the U.S. to take its first lead thanks to Shiann Darkangelo, who beat Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que.) for the 2-1 goal. Desbiens had replaced Canadian starter Amanda Makela (Thunder Bay, Ont.) midway through the middle frame. Down a goal and facing a sweep, the Canadians pushed the momentum to their side early in the third period when Josephs tied the game at 3:50 and Mercer put the Canucks on top with a power-play marker just 80 seconds later, but the Americans drew even again when Alex Carpenter converted with the man advantage within three minutes of the Mercer go-ahead goal. With overtime looming for the second game in a row it was Pfalzer and Field who combined again for the Americans, giving the U.S. the win with a goal at 19:24, sending the crowd at the Lake Placid Olympic Center home happy. With the series done, Canada’s players will return to their club teams to kick off the 2010-11 season. The Canadian coaching and scouting staffs will evaluate players during the season before determining who will represent Canada as it defends its IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship gold medal next spring in Sweden. |
