RUSSIANS REPEL EAST COMEBACK, GET PRE-WJAC WIN
JASON LA ROSE
ST. PAUL, ALTA. – Alexey Lipanov and Andrei Svechnikov led the offence with a goal and two assists apiece, pacing Russia to a 5-2 win over Canada East in pre-tournament play ahead of the 2016 World Junior A Challenge on Friday night.
Power-play goals from Tim Theochardis (Pickering, Ont./Carleton Place, CCHL) and Nick Lalonde (Brooklin, Ont./Cornwall, Ont.) helped the Canadians erase a two-goal deficit and pull even, but two goals in the final 1:38 of the second period put the Russians ahead for good.
Ivan Chekhovich, Maksim Marushev and Daniil Lobanov added goals for the Russians; the line of Chekhovich, Svechnikov and Lipanov combined for eight points in the victory, including six in the first period.
Svechnikov is no stranger to Hockey Canada events; the lone 16-year-old on the Russian roster posted eight points in four games to lead the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in scoring last month.
Canada East will help kick off the World Junior A Challenge on Sunday, taking on the Czech Republic in the tournament opener (3:30 p.m. MT), while the Russians see action for the first time Monday against Canada West (7:30 p.m. MT).
