TWO EARLY GOALS GIVE MANITOBA THE WIN OVER B.C.
SAGUENAY, Que. – Following a 2-1 win over Alberta and a 4-1 loss to Ontario Red, British Columbia needed a win to climb in the standings. For its part, Manitoba had lost its two previous games – 8-2 to Ontario Red and 2 -1 to Alberta. After taking a 2-0 lead thanks to two early goals in the first six minutes, Manitoba was able to hang on and beat British Columbia. Despite a goal in the final minutes, British Columbia could not complete its comeback and fell to its opponent from the Prairies. No goals were scored during the second period, but fans were treated to great saves at both ends of the ice as Rachel Dyck (Winnipeg Beach, Man.) and Hendricks turned away six and 11 shots, respectively, during the middle frame. Towards the end of the game, forward Stephanie Schaupmeyer (Kelowna, B.C.) lifted her team’s spirits by scoring on the power play to cut Manitoba’s lead to one with 46 seconds left on the clock. But B.C. was unable to complete its comeback, dropping to 1-2. The outcome of the other games later today will determine tomorrow’s match-ups. The semifinals will take place at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., with the fifth-place and seventh-place games scheduled for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. |
