CRISTIN SHANAHAN AND KAYLA BLACK COMBINE THEIR EFFORTS TO HELP ONTARIO BLUE WIN Saguenay, Quebec – After falling 4 -1 to Team Quebec yesterday, Ontario Blue had to find a way to bounce back against Saskatchewan to avoid falling to last place in the standings. For its part, Team Saskatchewan had lost its first game 4 -0 to Team Atlantic and its goaltender, Stefannie Moak, who made 33 saves.
Ontario Blue had a good first period thanks, in part, to goals from Cristin Shanahan (Ottawa, Ont.) and Lauren Merkley (Mississauga, Ont.). After taking a 2 -0 lead in the first, Ontario Blue seemed to gain confidence as the game went along. In the second period, Molly Cantini (Arthur, Ont.), Cristin Shanahan, with her second, and Sydney Mckibbon (Oakville, Ont.) lit up the red light three times in a span of less than 12 minutes. For Shanahan, this was her first two-goal game of the tournament. In the final 20 minutes, Ontario Blue put the game out of reach. On a beautiful pass from Emma Woods (Harley, Ont.), forward Taylor Accursi (Ancaster, Ont.) gave Ontario Blue a 6 -0 lead. But Ontario Blue was not done yet. Paige Horton (St. Thomas, Ont.) scored the seventh and final goal of the game for Ontario Blue. Kayla Black (Blyth, Ont.), Ontario Blue’s goaltender, was not very busy facing only 20 shots during the game, but she was up to the task when called upon and was able to shut out her opponents. Her counterpart for Team Saskatchewan, Jane Kish (Weyburn, Sask.), faced 32 shots. Ontario Blue will be back on the ice Friday to face Team Atlantic (1 p.m. ET) while Team Saskatchewan will play their hosts from Quebec (8 p.m. ET) also on Friday. There are still some good seats left at the Centre Georges-Vezina so come and see these future stars in action! |
