ROESLER SCORES TWO TO LEAD DEFENDING CHAMPS TO OPENING WIN

SAGUENAY, Que. – Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ont.) scored twice to pace the offence as Ontario Red opened the 2011 National Women’s Under-18 Championship with an 8-2 win over Manitoba on Wednesday afternoon.

Roesler scored twice in the third period to cap off a seven-goal outburst from Ontario Red (1-0), which trailed 2-1 after one period.

Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont.), Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont.), Ailish Forfar (Sutton West, Ont.), Jaimie McDonell (East York, Ont.), Cayley Mercer (Exeter, Ont.) and Nicole Connery, (Newmarket, Ont.) had the other goals for Ontario Red, which has lost only one game in seven trips to the national championship.

Callan Harland (Portage la Prairie, Man.) and Jessica Vallotton (Glenboro, Man.) scored the goals for Manitoba (0-1), with both goals coming on the power play.

Ontario Red looks to move to 2-0 on Thursday when it meets British Columbia (5 p.m. ET), while Manitoba takes on Alberta (10 a.m. ET) in a match-up of teams that suffered opening-day losses.
