GOALTENDING HELPS RED GET INTO WIN COLUMN

CALGARY, Alta. – Team Red has its first win at the National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp, and it has its goaltenders to thank for victory number one.

Nicole Paniccia (Oakville, Ont.) and Carmen MacDonald (Pictou, N.S.) combined to turn aside 35 of the 36 shots they faced and Red rebounded from Saturday night’s overtime loss with a 3-1 win over Team White on Sunday in the first of two 4-on-4 games at camp.

White held the advantage in shots on goal for the second night in a row, 36-25, but Paniccia stopped 18 of 19 shots and MacDonald was perfect on 17 chances, allowing Red to even the camp’s intersquad series at a game apiece.

Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont.), the youngest player at camp at just 15 years old, scored the game-winner early in the second period, blasting a slap shot over the shoulder of White netminder Kristy Garrow (London, Ont.), and set up the insurance goal by Aurora Kennedy (Mississauga, Ont.) late in the middle frame.

Kayla Tutino (Lorraine, Que.) scored the other goal for Red, opening the scoring by notching her camp-leading third goal just shy of the six-minute mark of the first period.

Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, Que.) had the lone goal for White, tipping a Lauren Kelly (Milton, Ont.) point shot past Paniccia with the pale-coloured side enjoying a first-period power play.

The 4-on-4 action continues Tuesday as Red and White meet at 7:45 p.m. MT at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena.
