SAULNIER’S PP MARKER ENDS WILD AFFAIR AS RED EARNS WIN CALGARY, Alta. – In a wild game of ‘anything you can do, I can do better,’ it was Team Red who made the
final move on Monday night. Saulnier’s winner came just minutes after Sarah Davis (Paradise, N.L.) and Baylee Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.) scored 66 seconds for White apart to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 5-5 tie. Red had taken a 5-3 lead with three unanswered goals late in the second period, erasing a 3-2 White advantage. The back-and-forth affair seemed unlikely in the early going, as Red notched the game’s first 13 shots, and took a 2-0 lead on goals from Gabrielle Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Que.) on the man advantage and Brienna Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.) shorthanded. But Ally Tarr (London, Ont.) got White on the board late in the opening frame and Jessica Campbell (Melville, Sask.) scored twice early in the second to give the pale-coloured team a lead despite just having six shots on goal on the board. Campbell had a chance to complete the natural hat trick, but was turned away on a penalty shot by Red netminder Nicole Paniccia (Oakville, Ont.). Brienna Gillanders added her second of the game around goals from Carly Mercer (Exeter, Ont.) and Mélodie Daoust (Valleyfield, Que.) as Red scored three times in 2:23 for its second of three leads in the game, this time at 5-3, setting the stage for the wild opening six minutes of the third period. Paniccia and Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont.) split the goaltending duties for Red, while Lisa Steffes (Amherstburg, Ont.) and Cloé Desjardins (Saint-Prosper, Que.) were between the pipes for White. The two teams do not return to game action until Wednesday night, when they split into four smaller groups and face off in a pair of 3-on-3 Red-White games, scheduled for 4 p.m. MT and 5 p.m. MT at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. |
