MERCER SCORES PAIR AS CANADA ADVANCES TO FINAL OF 2012 IIHF ICE HOCKEY U18 WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ZLIN, Czech Republic – Canada will get another crack at the United States in this year's gold medal final at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship. Canada dumped Sweden 7-0 at the PSG Arena on Friday night to set up a rematch with the defending champion Americans. “It was just an all-around good effort from our team,” said Cayley Mercer (Exeter, Ont./Bluewater, PWHL), who scored two goals. “It was a little scrambly in the second period, and our coach called us in for a timeout just to settle things down and get back to the game plan. From there it was a lot better.'' Erika Sowchuk (Fernie, B.C./Edge School, JWHL), Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont./Toronto, PWHL), Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) Sarah Lefort (Ormstown, Que./Stanstead College, NAPHA), and Kristyn Capizzano (Oakville, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) had the other goals. Canada outshot Sweden 33-6. Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) earned the shutout. The Americans advanced with a 7-1 win over Germany. Canada and the United States have dominated this event, meeting in the final at all four previous championships. Canada’s only gold medal came in April 2010, when the red and white defeated their rivals from south of the border 5-4 in overtime in Chicago, Ill. “The vibes are very good,” head coach Pierre Alain said. “(The players) are ready, they were happy today and they've had good rest. “They'll be ready to go tomorrow.'' |
