Series vs. USA Canada was looking for a win on Saturday to even its Canada-USA Women’s Under-22 series. After a 2-2 tie in Game # 1, USA won 2-0 on Thursday. Another enthousiastic crowd was on hand at the Sportplexe 4 Glaces in Pierrefonds, QC for Saturday’s tilt, the third and final game of the series. It was clear early on that Canada’s young squad had learned from the first two games, with a solid first period. Canada even held its first lead of the series as Katherine (Katie) Weatherston (Thunder Bay, ON) scored during a powerplay at 15:12 of the first frame. Canada had penalty trouble in the middle frame, and the U.S. power play, buoyed by the play of two Olympians Julie Chu and Natalie Darwitz, was opportunistic, scoring three times. Goals were scored by Darwitz, Rush Zimmerman and Lindsay Wall. In the third, Canada came out strong and tallied a powerplay marker of its own, at 6:07, as Rebecca Russell (Clarenville, NF) pushed a rebound past U.S. goaltender Judy Horak. A final flurry in the dying moments of the game wasn’t enough and the U.S. captured the game and series with a 3-2 win.
