Canada’s National Women’s Under 22 Team was edged 4-2 by Team USA in game two of a three game series played at Lake Placid, NY on Thursday night.
A penalty filled first period remained scoreless until Stephanie Jones of Grande Prairie, AB opened the scoring for Canada with a short handed goal with just over a minute remaining in the period. Britni Kehler of Mitchell, MB was solid in goal for Canada in the first half of the game, not yielding a goal until Liz Keady of Team USA beat her with 5 minutes remaining in the second period to tie the game.
Sarah Vaillancourt of Sherbrooke, QC gave Canada a 2-1 lead early in third, burying a centring pass from Noemie Marin high over the outstretched glove of USA goalie Meghan Horras. Team USA stormed back to take a 3-2 lead when Karen Thatcher and Kelly Stephens scored just over a minute apart midway through the period. The Americans added an insurance marker later in the period with Stephens scoring her second of the game on a point shot deflection. Team USA outshot Canada 29-24.
The final game of the series will be played on Saturday at the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT.
