CANADA RED PICKS UP SECOND WIN IN 10 HOURS WITH VICTORY OVER CIS

Thursday wasn’t too bad a day for Canada Red at the National Women’s Under-22 Team selection camp in Toronto.

After scoring a 3-2 win over Canada White on Thursday morning – a game postponed on Wednesday night after ice problems at Canlan Rink on the campus of York University – Canada Red returned to the ice just 10 hours later and picked up its second win of the day, topping a team of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) all-stars by a score of 5-1.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Canada Red found the scoreboard first when Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, ON/Mercyhurst College, CHA) converted with her team enjoying a two-man advantage.

The University of Alberta’s Jen Newton pulled the CIS even just over five minutes after Agosta’s marker, but Samantha Hunt (Calgary, AB/Colgate University, ECAC) restored the Canada Red lead before the end of the second period, sending it to the dressing room up 2-1 at the intermission.

With the CIS looking for the game-tying goal early in the third period, Canada Red’s Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, ON/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) pushed the lead to two just past the eight-minute mark and Amanda Shaw (St. Thomas, ON/Boston University, HE) and Laura McIntosh (Waterloo, ON/Mississauga, PWHL) added late goals to provide the winning margin.

McIntosh and Agosta each added an assist to their goals in the win.

Canada Red improved to a perfect 3-0 at the week-long camp, while the CIS is still looking for its first victory, sitting at 0-3. It will look to crack the win column on Friday when it faces Canada White (4 p.m. EDT).

Canada Red gets a well-deserved day off on Friday before wrapping up the camp on Saturday afternoon against Canada White (2 p.m. EDT).

The 22-member National Women’s Under-22 Team will be announced on Sunday morning and will travel to Pierrefonds, QC for a three-game series against the USA’s Women’s Under-22 Select Team, beginning August 23.
