Game Summary

Canada Red 3 - Canada White 2

BRAM’S LATE GOAL GIVES RED WIN OVER WHITE IN ALL-CANADIAN BATTLE

A goal from Bailey Bram (Ste. Anne, MB/Balmoral Hall, MB MAAA) with just over three minutes to go stood up as the game-winner as Canada Red won its second game in as many chances with a 3-2 victory over Canada White on Thursday morning at the National Women’s Under-22 selection camp in Toronto.

The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but problems with the ice plant at Canlan Rink on the campus of York University forced a postpoenement until early Thursday. Canada Red will still play its originally scheduled Thursday night game against a team of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) all-stars, with puck drop set for 8 p.m. EDT.

Canada Red took advantage of an early Canada White penalty to hit the scoreboard first, as Chelsea Karpenko (Winnipeg, MB/Notre Dame, SFMAAAHL) converted with the man advantage to give Red the 1-0 lead.

Canada White struck back just six minutes later, however, as Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, ON/Cornell University, ECAC) made no mistake on a pass from Jenelle Kohanchuk (Winnipeg, MB/Balmoral Hall, MB MAAA), beating Canada Red goaltender Kayley Herman (Weyburn, SK/University of New Hampshire, HE) and drawing her team even.

A goal from Olympic gold medalist Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, ON/Mercyhurst College, CHA) restored the Canada Red lead heading into the first intermission, but the combination of Johnston and Kohanchuk struck again early in the middle frame, drawing Canada White even at 2-2.

Outshooting Canada White 17-15 through two periods, Canada Red came out flying in the third period but could not beat netminder Liz Knox (Stouffville, ON/Wilfrid Laurier University, CIS), who faced 17 shots in the final 20 minutes, compared to just eight on Herman.

With time ticking away and the game still tied, Bram converted a rebound off a shot from Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, ON/University of New Hampshire, HE) to give Canada Red a one-goal advantage it would not relinquish.

Johnston and Kohanchuk had a goal and an assist apiece for Canada White, while Birchard added two helpers in the win for Canada Red.
