Rochester, MN - Canada's National Women's Team faced Kazakhstan for the first time women's international hockey to open the 2001 Women's Worlds, and welcomed the B Pool Champions to the A Pool by handing them an 11-0 whomping.
Nancy Drolet and Jayna Hefford paced Canada to a 2-0 lead in the span of just over minute of play in the 1st period. Kelly Béchard and Colleen Sostorics added markers as Canada led 4-0 after one period of play.
Canada's special teams came to the fore in the middle frame. Geraldine Heaney got the ball rolling with a powerplay goal at 1:12. Canada added two shorthanded goals in this period, by Dana Antal and Tammy Shewchuk.
Caroline Ouellette also scored in the 2nd period at even strength as Canada held an 8-0 advantage through forty minutes.
Canada added 3 goals in the third, by Jennifer Botterill (2) and Caroline Ouellette, to win 11-0.
Canada next faces Russia on April 3rd, 2001 at 7:30 pm (Central Time).
