Team Summary/Sommaire d'Équipe

Did you know?

… that the first hockey team in Japan was Isetan, formed in Tokyo in 1973

Japan qualified for this year's world championships by winning the Division I tournament in 2003 in Ventspils, Latvia. The Japanese defeated Kazakhstan on the final day of the round-robin tournament 2-0 to ensure first place and keep the Kazakhs in second place. Thus, the team playing in Halifax in this year's top-level tournament will do well just to stay competitive throughout. To their advantage, most of the women on this national team play for one of three club teams—Iwakura, Rokkatei, and Kokudo—thus ensuring familiarity with each other's play. Head coach Kenji Nobuta will rely heavily on Yuka Oda in goal. The other goalies on the squad are Tomoko Fujimoto and Taeko Kakumaru. On defence, 18-year-old Haruna Kumano and 20-year-old Emi Nonaka are expected to get the lion's share of ice time against the top players on the opposition. The rest of the blueline includes Etsuko Wada, Yoko Kondo, Asako Kanno, Tomoe Yamane, Tomoko Sakagami, and Masami Akama. The top forwards are 21-year-old Hanae Kubo and 30-year-old Masako Sato. The rest of the forward roster includes Chiaki Yamanaka, Chiemi Noshita, Haruka Takashima, Yuki Togawa, Aki Tsuchida, Yoko Tamada, Michiko Ibe, Saori Akita, Shoko Nihonyanagi, and Yae Kawashima.
