APPS, BOTTERILL EACH SCORE PAIR IN CANADIAN WIN ESPOO, Finland – Canada’s National Women’s Team came out firing on Sunday night. And it paid off in a big way. Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) and Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, Man./Mississauga, CWHL) each scored a pair of goals to lead Canada to an 8-0 victory over the Espoo Blues Midget AAA boys team. It was Canada’s second win in as many days over Midget AAA competition. The teams played through a scoreless opening 12 minutes before the Canadians turned on the heat. Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ont./Calgary, WWHL) opened the scoring on the power play at 12:31 – the second day in a row she opened the scoring – and Apps notched her first of the game just over a minute later, converting a pass from Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Dawson College, CEGEP). Botterill and Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont./Mercyhurst College, CHA) scored 16 seconds apart late in the opening frame to send the Canadians to the dressing room up by four. Apps scored Canada’s lone goal in the second period to make it 5-0 before Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC), Boterill and Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alta./Edmonton, WWHL) counted goals in the third period. Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, Que./Montreal, CWHL) made 24 saves for the shutout. Canada will hit the ice next on Tuesday, when it faces Finland’s National Women’s Team in the final tuneup game ahead of the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Championship. The tournament kicks off on April 4, with Canada taking on China.
