PENALTY KILLING, FIRST PERIOD SPURT HELP RED TOP WHITE

TORONTO, Ont. – Olivia Howe (Moose Jaw, Sask.) and Brittany Zuback (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored goals 27 seconds apart midway through the first period, sparking Red to a 3-2 victory over White on Saturday afternoon at the National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp at the MasterCard Centre.

Sarah MacDonnell (Quispamsis, N.B.) also scored for Red, which exacted a measure of revenge with the win – in the first meeting between the teams last Sunday, White came out on top by a score of 6-2.

Despite the quick goals from Howe and Zuback, Kristine Grenier (St. Leon, Man.) replied for White just 41 seconds after Zuback’s 2-0 marker, and White had seven power play chances in the first two periods, compared to just one opportunity on the man advantage for Red, but never got back to even.

MacDonnell’s goal 11:25 into the middle frame against White netminder Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) proved to be the winner, coming just minutes after White squandered a 1:39 5-on-3 advantage.

Alexis Crossley (Cole Harbour, N.S.) scored the other goal for White, pulling her team to within a goal at 3-2 with 11:33 remaining by beating Red goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que.).

With the intersquad games complete, Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team will be named on Sunday morning and will face Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team on Monday before heading to Lake Placid, N.Y. to take on the United States in a three-game series, August 18-21.
