OUELLETTE, PIPER LEAD RED TO CAMP WIN OVER WHITE

TORONTO, Ont. – Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que./Montreal, CWHL) and Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) scored two goals apiece as Red opened the National Women’s Team selection camp with a win on Sunday night, beating White 6-4 at the MasterCard Centre.

Ouellette added an assist for a four-point night, while Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Boston University, HE) contributed a goal and two helpers.

The French connection of Ouellette and Poulin each found the back of the net in the first period, sandwiched around a goal from White’s Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask./University of Calgary, CIS), to give Red a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

Piper notched her first of the game to make it a 3-1 game early in the second period, but Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont./University of Minnesota Duluth, WCHA) and Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) struck 15 seconds apart to pull White even at 3-3 midway through the frame. But Piper beat White goaltender Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, Que./McGill University, CIS) for a 4-3 lead and Ouellette added her second before the end of the second to send Red to the dressing room up by a pair.

Irwin and Red’s Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./Boston University, HE) traded goals in the third period to round out the scoring.

Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont./Wilfrid Laurier University, CIS) got the win in goal for Red.

The two teams return the ice Monday night at 7 p.m. ET for the second of three intrasquad games.
