2012 Esso Cup

Edmonton Thunder 1 - Thunder Bay Queens 6

GAZZOLA LEADS BY EXAMPLE IN QUEENS IMPRESSIVE VICTORY OVER THUNDER

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Jessica Gazzola (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored three times in the third period, to top of her day on the ice with four points total, to help the Thunder Bay Queens beat the Edmonton Thunder 6-1, on the second day of preliminary action Monday at the 2012 Esso Cup.

The second tournament win for the 2010 gold medallists gives the Thunder Bay Queens a total of 18 goals scored so far at this year’s National Female Midget Championship, including 12 in Sunday’s win over host team Capital District Cyclones.

In the first minutes of Monday’s game against Edmonton, Brianna Iazzolino (Thunder Bay, Ont.) directed a pass from Michela Cava (Thunder Bay, Ont.) behind goaltender Chloe Sanderson (Edmonton, Alta.) to make it 1-0 in the first five minutes. Sanderson faced a furry of shots in the opening period, seemingly standing on her head to keep most pucks out of the Edmonton net.

In the second, Edmonton answered with a goal of its own, as Sasha Lutz (Edmonton, Alta.) rushed to the net and battled hard, finally putting it into the mesh and tying it up at 3:33 in the period. But with a 1-1 score on the board, the Queens kept coming, with Jillian Langtry (Fort Frances, Ont.) and Kaitlyn Tougas (Thunder Bay Ont.) both lighting up the red light within just over a minute of each other.

The third period  was all about Thunder Bay, with Gazzola sending one puck after another soaring into the back of Edmonton’s net, earning herself a hat trick in less than ten minutes, including one power-play goal, to finalize the score at 6-1 for the Ontario representatives.

The Thunder Bay Queens is back on the ice at noon AT on Tuesday, to face off against the Rebelles de Saguenay (Quebec) on Day 3 of the 2012 Esso Cup. The Edmonton Thunder  take on host team the Capital District Cyclones at 7 p.m. AT on the CARI Complex ice Tuesday night.
