PEMBINA VALLEY HAWKS STAY UNDEFEATED, SOAR INTO SECOND PLACE AT ESSO CUP by Geordie Carragher CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Minor hockey coaches tell players to put pucks on net because anything can happen. Look no further than the Pembina Valley Hawks (West) as a case study. A pair of Kenzie-Dawn Dearsley (Baldur, Man.) shots were deflected past Halifax Metro Boston Pizza (Atlantic) goaltender Stefannie Moak (Sackville, N.S.) to give Pembina Valley a 2-1 victory Tuesday, and keep the Hawks undefeated, on Day 3 of the 2012 Esso Cup at the CARI Complex. The win moves Pembina Valley into second place in the standings with eight points, just behind current leaders the Thunder Bay Queens (Ontario). The Pembina Valley goals were scored by Kari Braun (Altona, Man.) and Brooke Drummond (Holland, Man.), who also assisted on Braun’s goal. Braun opened the scoring early in the first period by deflecting a Dearsley shot from the top of the faceoff circle. The change in direction sent Moak the wrong way, giving Pembina Valley the early lead. The Hawks maintained the lead until midway through the second, when Breanna Lanceleve (Sackville, N.S.) converted a great pass from Amanda Volcko (Halifax, N.S.) from the top of the crease to tie the game at 1-1, while also ending a shutout streak for Pembina Valley netminder Brittni Mowat (Glenboro, Man.). In total, Mowat has stopped 68 of 69 shots in the tournament over 157 minutes. Lanceleve’s goal would be the only one of the game for Halifax Metro. The even score didn’t last long, as Pembina Valley converted on a power-play late in the second, with Hawks captain Madison Hutchinson (Manitou, Man.) feeding Dearsley, who took the shot from the point. The puck deflected off Drummond and past Moak to put Pembina Valley ahead 2-1, to stay. Mowat stopped 16 shots for Pembina Valley, while Moak made 25 saves to keep Halifax Metro in the game. Pembina Valley’s next game is at 7:30 p.m. AT on Wednesday, when the Hawks take on the host team Capital District Cyclones, while Halifax Metro Boston Pizza will look to return to the win column against the Thunder Bay Queens at 4 p.m. AT on Wednesday.
